Runs entirely in your browser — files never leave your device

Convert a PDF into an RTF (Rich Text Format) document you can open and edit in Word, WordPad, Pages, LibreOffice, or almost any word processor. The text layer of your PDF is extracted and rebuilt as flowing, editable paragraphs.

How to use PDF to RTF

  1. 1Select your PDF, or drag and drop it onto the upload area above.
  2. 2Wait a moment while the pages are read and the text layer is extracted.
  3. 3Download the .rtf file and open it in your word processor to edit.

What is an RTF file?

RTF is a plain-text document format created by Microsoft that stores formatting instructions such as bold, italics, fonts, and paragraph breaks alongside the text itself. Because the format is open and text-based, RTF files open reliably in nearly every word processor on Windows, macOS, Linux, and mobile — without the compatibility surprises of proprietary formats.

When to choose RTF over DOCX or TXT

Pick RTF when you need editable text that keeps basic formatting but must open anywhere — for example when you do not know which software the recipient uses. Choose plain TXT if you only need the raw words, and DOCX if you need advanced layout, styles, and tracked changes.

Good to know

  • Scanned PDFs (pictures of pages) contain no text layer, so nothing can be extracted — those need OCR first.
  • Complex multi-column layouts, tables, and text boxes are flattened into linear paragraphs.
  • Images, vector drawings, and form fields are not carried into the RTF output.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PDF to RTF converter free?
Yes. Every conversion is free with no sign-up, no watermark, and no page limit.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. This conversion runs entirely inside your browser, so your document never leaves your device.
Can I edit the RTF file after converting?
Yes — that is the point of RTF. Open the downloaded file in Word, WordPad, Pages, Google Docs, or LibreOffice Writer and edit the text freely.
Why is my converted file empty?
Your PDF is most likely a scan or an image export with no selectable text. Try selecting text in a PDF reader first; if you cannot select it, the file needs optical character recognition.
